Weekend Reading: “Prosperity without Growth? – Transition to a Sustainable Economy”

As 2.1 million citizens of Metro Vancouver observe their municipal elected officials consider accepting the 2040 Regional Growth Strategy in the next several days, we offer up a bit of reading about fundamental issues of “growth.” The RGS is a legal bylaw with teeth, set to replace the guidance-oriented “Livable Regional Strategic Plan.” Perhaps this will provide some interesting weekend reading from the UK’s Sustainable Development Commission: Download Prosperity without Growth? – The transition to a sustainable economy.
Prosperity Without Growth? says that the global recession should be the occasion to forge a new economic system equipped to avoid the shocks and negative impacts associated with our reliance on growth. Ahead of the G20 Summit in London, the report called on leaders to adopt a 12-step plan to make the transition to a fair, sustainable, low-carbon economy.
