Pink Shirt Day, February 23, 2011

Today is Pink Shirt Day, an international day against bullying. 24 Hours carried an article on Feb 17 about Jim Jordan of “Report Bullying,” who said that bullying is a societal problem affecting everyone and we’re all responsible for eradicating it. His program focuses on urging bystanders to take a proactive stance against such behaviour. “When [bystanders are] complacent, they’re complicit…They’re either part of the problem or they’re part of the solution.” Metrotown in Burnaby hosts a related display today. MetroVanWatch believes that bullying can be not only a person-to-person phenomenon but also institutional. We note that many levels of government have endorsed Pink Shirt Day, and hope that all players stay vigilant to ensure that institutional bullying by the strong and influential against the weaker stakeholder groups in our society does not occur. In the context of the current debate about the Regional Growth Strategy, this is an important theme.
